Failed after just at 39 months. The manufacturer nor the extended warranty company, New Leaf, would stand behind their product. Avoid this! They say there is corrosion when the freezer died and thousands of dollars of meat spoiled. We specifically went with this unit as we were told it was a garage ready unit and are told now it isn™€™t. Save your money and avoid both.

Beware! Our Freezer Life Was Less Than 5 Years

UA2101928 purchased 6/19/2021. From Best Buy, Coralville, IA. Purchased a 3 year protection plan for 88.65 but it didn't help when the freezing temperature began to increase and decrease. Paid $985.82 for unit. My son added additional temperature monitors after the first defrosting sensor occurred (inside) went off. We're having to throw out everything! Must be 30 sirloin steaks, 2 turkeys, plus many packages of chicken, vegetables, etc. So far it's half empty. In the past, my family and I often purchased Whirlpool appliances. Never again.

Total loss of 5000$ - worst customer service

I already reviewed this item two months ago. I bought it in January 2026 for a total of 1900$ with taxes and extended warranty, 4 months later in late May, there was a huge chunk of ice at the bottom (which I removed) and a few days later I realized that I lost over 600$ of food. I called customer service on June 3rd. The first lady was extremely rude. She said that there would be a charge for the service call and I had to make her repeat because the line kept cutting and she then said that 'my English was inadequate for English customer service'. The nerve, so I had her transfert my call to her supervisor, who was more professional and assured me that there would be no charge for the service call. The first service call on June 4th, the guy said that he couldn't work in the room the freezer was in (small room), that he would come back. He came back on the 8th and he said he couldn't do anything because I had unplugged it (however he didn't look inside the previous time and didn't mentioned that it needs to stay plugged in). He said to put some water in a bowl and plug it back in. He came back on the 9th, the water was frozen and he said problem solved. On July 3rd, I noticed that I had again lost for over 200$ worth of food. On July 6th I called directly the repair man. Fourth service call was on July 7th, he looked in for a minute, said I'll order the piece and left (which could have been done on the first service call, even in a small room). Fifth service call was on July 10th, he replaced a bit that is 4 inches long and must cost 20$. On July 30th, I noticed that the freezer had again stopped freezing and that I had lost another 400$ of food. So between the cost of the freezer, the cost of lost food and the cost of lost revenue for 5 service calls... I am now at almost 5000$ of losses for a 6 months insane ordeal. We called today again and they say they cannot reimburse us because it's not protocole, that I would have to go through many more rounds of service call until someone would agree it is unserviceable. Before we loose more money on this lemon and this abysmal company, we decide to cut our losses and buy another one from another company. Do not buy. Do not trust this company. IT IS SHAMEFUL My Case Number is #23736361. I will ensure that I leave this review in as many places as I possibly can... it is so sad that it has to come to this, these companies make millions for their CEO and abuse their customers. I probably will never recover any of the money I lost...

I really love my new freezer. I love all of the shelves and drawers. It is so easy to store and find what you need. The only thing I would change is that I would love one exactly like this but bigger. We garden, etc. and I have 2 freezers and am looking for a new 2nd freezer that is 21 cf.

Upright freezers are the way to go. I'm not sure why anyone would use a chest freezer, they are too hard to dig to the bottom. This freezer holds a LOT of items which is great when buying in bulk. The LED lighting is very bright and sitting in the garage maintains the right temperature.

Working well so far, Avg Temp -3.6F monitored with a Govee Smart Thermometer. The Temp varies 10.2 F between on and off cycle with the freezer set to the coldest setting. The defrost cycle is not described well in Whirlpool literature "Automatic" but I found a description on Grok "it uses an adaptive electronic control system rather than a traditional mechanical defrost timer. " The freezer could use one more upper shelf. The refrigerant uses 600a Iso Butane which is temperamental but was required by Obama's green regulations, Trump just cancelled this requirement. I hope the manufactures change back to freon refrigerant, its more reliable according to authorized Whirlpool techs.

When it is working, it is good. About every 3-4 weeks, the coils freeze over. No repairman can fix. Says part to fix is discontinued. So, I take the food out. Get the hairdryer out and clean coils. We bought this freezer 2.5 years ago and it stopped working while we were away on vacation. We lost most of the food that was in the freezer ($$$) and even though it's clearly the compressor that failed, this is excluded from the sealed system warranty that is on other models for up to 5 years. Our only option is to pay half of what we originally paid to repair it ($450+, whirlpool's offer) or buy a new one. I don't understand how a freezer can go out after 2.5 years when we did everything the right way.

Found a massive amount of ice in the bottom vent (even though it's supposed to be ice free) and now realized that half the food has defrosted... will loose hundreds of dollars worth of food. Home Depot purchase at the end of February. Needed the unit then - got a 3 week delivery instead. Price was more than what the unit's worth, but, you know, tariffs. Interior space is adequate but appears designers that arrange the available space live on a different planet. One star loss due to unusually noisy compressor. It emits 20 decibels at 500Hz, so when it's running you can hear it through walls and nearly throughout the house. Claims of frost free are dubious. I am comparing the Whirlpool to a 16-year-old Kenmore sub-zero freezer of approximately the same size. The Kenmore was whisper quiet and the interior space showed someone had put some thought into it. I may congratulate myself on purchasing an extended warranty as I don't believe this unit will last 5 years. Thanks for nothing Home Depot. Thanks for nothing Whirlpool.

My 21 cubic foot freezer went out so I bought the 17 cubic foot. Granted it does not have as much space as the 21 foot but it is really nice freezer. The only negative thing I can say about this freezer is that it has a lot of wasted space. The individual shelves on the door are a ridiculous design. It would serve a consumer much better if it had a single shelf all the way across the door instead of little cubby holders. Now I need to contact the company to see if I can purchase two more door shelves.

I am rating our overall experience with our purchase experience not just the freezer. We bought the original freezer in September 2025 - it never worked. We missed the 2-day return period allowed by Lowes for a time-payment purchase & therefore had to wait for a Whirlpool service technician. The technician came out and could not fix and placed an order for a control panel replacement. The part was backordered & never arrived after a three month wait. We then had to continue talking with Whirlpool who finally decided to replace the freezer which had been sitting in our house all these months inoperable. We then had to wait an addition 3 weeks for the new replacement freezer to arrive. The replacement freezer finally arrived on 1/30/2026. I emphasize that the original freezer never worked and it required working with Whirlpool from 1/28/25 until a working freezer was delivered on 1/30/2026. The new freezer is working so far. The return policy should not vary depending on how it is purchased and a customer should not have to wait 4 months for resolution.

We bought this Whirlpool 20 cu. ft. upright freezer to replace our 46 year old (still working) Whirlpool upright 15.7 cu. ft. upright freezer for a little more food storage space and electrical efficiency. So far, so good. It works as advertised. It freezes and keeps the food frozen. The only thing I would change is the temperature alarm and power light from inside the freezer to outside the freezer. But...we survived 46 years without an alarm and power light. Definitely not a deal breaker in my opinion!

Bought this freezer about 7 months ago. Seems to work great, but if a high temp alarm is important to you, the alarm is so low you can not hear it unless you are right next to it. Most people keep their freezer away from the normal living area, so it doesn't do much good.
